2 Peter 2:3 – “By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.”
The focus of Peter’s writing today is to show the motivating factor as well as modus operandi of false teachers. Covetousness is their driving force, always looking for what to gain. These are people who equate gain with godliness. Their target is people’s pocket, always eager to device ingenious ways to manipulate innocent souls. A basic tool in the hand of false teachers is deceptive words. They have mastered the art of making God’s word say what they want; they love tingling people’s ears. Though Peter assures that their judgment is waiting, we owe ourselves the duty of remaining watchful not to become partakers of their evil way.
Here is the balance: the covetousness of a few should not produce in us a miserly attitude which can effectively block the flow of God’s blessing. The recommendation here is giving with discernment. There are several ministers who are keeping it real with God’s word. They may not be known faces on the back cover of a glossy magazine. Certainly, they will not make the list of the top 10 richest preachers; however, they are reaching out to local communities, and extending the territory of the kingdom of God the best way possible. Locate such by the help of the Spirit and sow into their lives and work. In the Parable of the Sower, four types of soil were identified. Incidentally, only one soil brought increase. The ground where the undiluted word of God is present is akin to the good soil with guarantee of return. Shalom!
